MEDICAL

There are three main reasons that each child receive a medical exam:

  • To reassure your child and you, as a parent/guardian, that your child's body is okay.
  • To check for injury, sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy in sex abuse cases.
  • To check your child's overall health and collect forensic evidence.

The forensic medical exam is similar to a complete physical that a patient receives by his/her doctor. It's not like a female annual examination. A full internal pelvic exam is never performed on young children.

The Center uses only non-invasive procedures made possible by a colposcrope, a piece of equipment that magnifies the area and takes a photo. You will not have any out-of-pocket expense for this exam. What is not covered by insurance will be covered by special funding set aside just for medical examinations.
